Nightbane

Isla Crown is the protagonist of Nightbane, and although the story is narrated in the third person, it is entirely viewed from her point of view. She is a young woman and ruler of the Wildling realm who, at the beginning of the novel, has just found out that she possesses both Wildling and Nightshade powers. In addition, she has also become the Starling ruler after killing the former one (see Lightlark), so she has access to Starling abilities as well.

After being raised by her mentors Terra and Poppy, who kept her isolated from the rest of her people, Isla learned that they manipulated her for their own interest. As a result, she initially feels unqualified as a leader. Throughout the story, Isla attempts to learn more about her people and their customs to gain their trust and serve them better. She is often depicted putting their interests or well-being before her own, and the narrative repeatedly emphasizes her desire to protect the Wildlings and the Starlings. She even comes to the conclusion that she needs to implement a democracy in the Starling realm out of respect for the Starlings’ agency and free will.
